Liposuction was the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure performed in 2006. It is one of the more common procedures performed by Dr. Greenwald at his Westchester County, New York surgical facility. Liposuction, also known as suction lipectomy or lipoplasty, is a minimally invasive surgical technique used to eliminate localized fat deposits. Traditionally, liposuction was used for recontouring the abdomen and hips; however, liposuction is now used in Dr. Greenwald’s practice to recontour and remove unwanted fat from just about anywhere on the body. Refinements in liposuction techniques including the use of smaller cannulas allows Dr. Greenwald to give you a precise result. Liposuction can be dome as an isolated procedure but may be combined with excisional surgery such as abdominoplasty if indicated.

Below are frequently asked questions about liposuction:
Liposuction is the ideal treatment for patients at or slightly above their normal weight who are bothered by isolated pockets of fat that significantly take away from their body’s contour. Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity and it is not recommended in patients who have a significant amount of excess skin or skin of poor quality (significant stretch marks). For patients with excess skin and poor quality skin, excisional surgery such as abdominoplasty or tummy tuck surgery is a better option. Liposuction works by reducing the volume or amount of fat in a particular area and then allowing the skin to redrape, contract and shrink to envelope the reduced volume. Skin with stretch marks and skin of older patients may not tighten over the area which has been reduced by liposuction. Some of the more common areas treated by liposuction are the abdomen, hips, flans, lateral thighs, medical thighs, medial knees, chin and arms.
Liposuction patients are amongst the happiest cosmetic surgery patients. If you are unsure liposuction is right for you, schedule a consultation with Dr. Greenwald to find out. In liposuction, fat is removed via a small, hollow tube called a cannula. Incisions are placed in areas where the body’s natural creases will minimize any potential scarring. Incisions are smaller than a centimeter in length. Once the incision is made, solution containing anesthesia and epinephrine (“wetting solution”) are infused to minimize pain and blood loss. Once the area to be treated has been infused with wetting solution, the cannula is connected to a suction unit and guided by the expert hands of Dr. Greenwald. The cannula device then literally suctions away the unwanted fat – permanently. Care is taken to avoid irregularities in the skin caused by aggressive superficial liposuction. Care is also taken to avoid causing depressions from overly aggressive fat removal.
During your initial liposuction consultation, Dr. Greenwald will inquire about your medical and surgical history including current medications and allergies. It is important to be thorough when discussing your medical history as safety is Dr. Greenwald’s top priority. Your full disclosure of all pertinent medical information prior to surgery will reduce the incidence of unwanted complications after surgery. You will discuss your concerns and motivations for seeking liposuction. Details of liposuction will be discussed including incision placement as well what is expected of you preoperatively and postoperatively. The risks of surgery will also be discussed in detail. Numerous before and after photographs of actual patients will be reviewed during your consultation.
You will then be asked to put a gown on. Dr. Greenwald will then carefully examine the areas which concern you (abdomen, thighs, arms, etc). Photographs will be taken. Dr. Greenwald will then review your photographs with you. Differences between the contours of the two sides of your body (i.e. asymmetry) will be noted and proposed incisions demonstrated. Computer imaging is an invaluable part of the consultation. Computer images may be modified during your consultation to give you an idea of what your result may be like (No guarantees are made). Dr. Greenwald encourages you to ask any questions during you consultation. Following your consultation, you will meet with Missy, Dr. Greenwald’s patient coordinator, to discuss scheduling your surgery and answer any questions you may have forgotten to ask Dr. Greenwald.

Following your liposuction procedure, you will immediately notice an improvement in the treated areas. The result will be somewhat obscured initially by swelling and bruising that varies from patient to patient. If present, the bruising will resolve within a week or two. Swelling can take several months and sometime up to a year to completely resolve though the majority of the swelling is gone by three months.
The results from liposuction are permanent provided you maintain a stable weight. Improvement continues for up to six months after surgery as the swelling subsides and skin contraction becomes maximal.
