Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a procedure that reduces the size and enhances the shape of a woman’s breast. Incisions are typically located around the areola (pigmented skin around the nipple) extending down to the fold underneath the breast, and underneath the breast itself. There are many “short scar” techniques that eliminate the incision placed underneath the breast. Dr. Greenwald will let you know during your consultation if you are a candidate for a minimal incision breast reduction. Candidates for a minimal incision breast reduction are frequently those patients seeking a small reduction and have minimal excess breast skin and stretch marks. When a short scar breast reduction technique is used, liposuction is frequently utilized to reduce the lateral and axillary breast fullness. Once you have scheduled your breast reduction surgery with Dr. Greenwald in New York, you will be given preoperative instructions that discuss everything from finances to follow-up visits after your surgery. Prior to your breast reduction surgery in New York, you will need basic blood work and medical clearance from your primary medical doctor. You will receive prescriptions form Dr. Greenwald’s patient coordinator prior to breast reduction surgery. A mammogram may be requested if Dr. Greenwald feels it is indicated. It is important to have the medication prescriptions filled in the days prior to your surgery so they are waiting for you when you return home from your breast reduction surgery.
You will receive a list of medications (ie aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) to avoid for 14 days prior to your breast reduction surgery with Dr. Greenwald. Additionally, though there is no scientific proof that certain medications reduce bruising, swelling and pain after breast reduction surgery, you will be asked to obtain Arnica Montana, Bromelain and Vitamin A pills to take prior to and after your procedure. Finally, the night before your breast reduction, shower and wash as you would normally and do not eat or drink after midnight.
